Me and Rubyfruit

‘Me and Rubyfruit’ was shot entirely on a Fischer-Price PXL 2000 camera, hence the childishly grainy quality. It is ultimately a video diary or log commenting on Sadie Benning’s troubles with her sexuality and unhappiness. The narrative is similar to Elizabeth Wurtzel in Prozac Nation, and the dialogue is interspersed with random shots of Benning’s bedroom; a lamp, fluffy toys, the view of the Brooklyn (?) suburbs from her window. There seems little point to the film, as we are presented with a character who we have little or no sympathy for; Benning alienates her audience for her character is very rigidly set as someone who many people cannot relate to (16 year old confused lesbian with a stereotyped and cliched teen-angst aura about her). In terms of style, it is certainly original for there are few films available that are shot in “Pixeltron” yet it is certainly dull and has as much professionalism as an unedited home-made movie.

A New Year

 This masterly short was made when she was sixteen years old. A diaristic peer out from beneath a manhole cover, it’s a kid’s first dip of a pinky toe into the adult world, rendered as a series of swirly, surreal segments of “The Price Is Right,” supermarket tabloids read to the tune of AM radio, and friends’ DUIs re-enacted using one’s brother’s Tonka toys. About as on the nose of where we are as NATURAL BORN KILLERS and about as formally daring as SCORPIO RISING (if more modest), A NEW YEAR is testament to a little-known fact: this kid is–overused word, so watch it–a genius.

「愛」在流行文化中已成為非常受歡迎的一個主題，近年來那些天天在電視和戲院中從早到晚愛得死去活來的劇情，佔了中文流行歌至少八成的失戀歌，更是讓我們愛得透不過氣來。綜合多年工作的累積，我們發現，就著我們關心的事物中，關於愛與慾，有幾個問題令我們很好奇，亦發現許多日常生活中的拉力，讓我們很想探討個中玄機。「物．流．愛」是影行者今年的重要拍攝計劃之一。

不瘦降之謎 Super Size Me

本是電視製作人的摩根．史培洛，一日吃飽無事，在電視上看到兩名癡肥少女控告M記出售不健康食品，而M記則 指他們的食物無害，即使一日食足三餐都不會有事。為了「見證」M記的說法，摩根決定自己以身犯險。

為證明快餐與美國人肥胖的共生關係，摩根．史培洛進行了一個為期三十日的實驗，一日三餐只吃M記出售的食物 及飲品，包括水，而且還遵守有三項規則：當被M記問及要不要加大時，必須答「要」；餐單上所有食品至少要吃一次，及所有食物必須吃光。一個月，摩根共吃下三十磅糖十二磅脂肪，體重上升二十四磅！除此之外，他還落 力走訪不同地方，巨無霸fans、汽水迷都成為其追訪對象，他更帶觀眾踢爆學校膳食、食品工業、揭露傳媒甚至政府的漠視態度。

2003年2月，實驗正式開始，其實摩根在第二天就已經開始受不住，店員詢問他要不要加大，他按規接受，因而獲得一包重半磅的薯條和四十二安士的汽水！與快餐苦戰一輪之後，他將所有食物吐出來。摩根選擇堅持下去，於 是在往後的日子他漸漸感到胸口翳悶、頭痛、抑鬱等症狀。進行實驗十日後的檢驗結果令醫生對於他的健康相當擔心，亦為快餐食物對健康的影響感到驚訝。奇怪的是，摩根一邊承受M記食品對他帶來的壞處，卻一邊對快餐食 品上癮！

最後，他完成漫長的「旅程」，摩根最後花了十四個月才恢復原本體重。拍攝期間摩根多次致電M記的高層要求訪 問都不獲回覆，但影片公映之後，M記向外界表示摩根的餐單以偏概全，但卻取消加大碼套餐，更指決定與《不瘦降之謎》無關，不過影片仍引起廣泛關注，票房走勢強勁之餘，更榮獲辛丹斯電影節最佳紀錄片導演獎。

CHINA BLUE

Shot clandestinely in China, under difficult conditions, this is a deep-access account of what both China and the international retail companies don’t want us to see – how the clothes we buy are actually made. China Blue takes us inside a blue-jeans factory,where two teenage girls, Jasmine and Orchid, are trying to survive the harsh working environment. Their lives intersect that of the film’s other protagonist and factory owner, Mr. Lam. Providing perspectives from both the top and bottom levels of the factory’s hierarchy, this film brings complex issues of globalization to the human level. Like millions before her, Jasmine leaves her home village for a far-away factory job. Her initial excitement to be able to help her family quickly melts away as she is overwhelmed by the long work hours and the delays in pay. Her only solace is the strong friendships she forms with her co-workers.

大寧靜

導演苦等十五年，才可登上亞爾卑斯山上的加爾都西會的總修院，拍攝修士日常起居：自修、破柴、剪髮、祈禱、團拜、遊戲，和這些自知永不再離開修道院，不再離開斗室的人，一起面對風光明媚，以及冷酷的寧靜。承如導演所言，電影果真像一幅會動的畫，心境也伴隨修院的安寧而沉靜，卻透出陣陣孤觸氣味。片中不時加插各修士的「大頭」補鏡，在他們眼中，他們生命中，也許除了神之外便一無所有，也可能因為神而不怕一無所有。縱然修士千百，縱使同桌吃飯，靈修，各人也不過躲在心靈的斗室，互不往來。老修人對新來的黑人說：「這是不易過的生活。」然而最後也如同山野風光，如同四季，如同不斷重覆的生活、畫面一樣，舊去新來，新人接舊人，繼續在自己的心房中默念，變在於不變，在於「一」。

新宿驛，東口以東

位於東京都的新宿區，是日本商業交易最繁榮的地區之一。這裡的外來人口眾多，包括台灣人、韓國人、中國移民都群聚在這一小方土地。而自新宿區JR電車車站東口起走數分鐘的歌舞伎町，電影院、劇場、餐廳、風化店、酒吧、賓館、飯店、賭博店密集，總計有超過三千家酒家及特種行業匯聚在此，其中包括一千多家台灣人開設的夜店，不論白天或夜晚，宛如不夜城，因此又被稱為「不眠之街」。

熙來攘往的人潮也帶來高犯罪率。據日本警視廳指出，歌舞伎町一平方公里去年發生刑案件數為東京都內平均數的四十倍，達五千四百件，而外國人的兇惡犯罪更是大幅增加，讓歌舞伎町成為一無法律的地區，因而被日本人視為腫瘤。二十年來，有超過一萬個台灣女子懷著不同的理由來到日本酒店工作，過著日本複製人的生活；而另一群台灣男性拋棄了自己的身分，隱身於按摩店與賭場中，過著如隱形人般的生活。

二十年過去了，這群在台灣已被污名化的女性及隱避消失的男性，寄了大筆的外匯回到台灣，改善了原生家庭的經濟。但屬於他們的歷史，卻沒有人願意提起。

美國清一Sick檔案

米高．摩亞一向愛對現美國華府冷嘲熱諷，尤其小布殊政權。他除了在公開場合的宣示╱宣講之外，就是以不同範疇的社會問題做介入式的紀錄片，去結算華府的厚顏無恥。而在2007年，米高找到的題目居然跟香港政府正打算在來屆立法會硬銷的「醫療融資」不謀而合。片中以美國一些高中產、低下階層，作米高以外的主角，一同面對「冇錢冇醫保」（香港的暫當作「冇工作冇醫保」吧，但根本概念同出一徹）、有醫保無錢醫等等問題，而窺伺保險公司如何把整個醫療體制消磨，以致潰敗。美 國人的生命，因而比其他已發展國家更值錢，但更沒保障。片中的數據、分析、揶揄，固然值得討論。但米高．摩亞紀錄的態度，被視為一貫的「政治宣傳」作風時，身處別國，不必處理「愛（美）國主義」的我們，又會如何處理「愛國主義」的問題呢？

鬍子與修女The Monastery: Mr Vig and the Nun

Mr. Vig is an elderly, deeply eccentric, never-married Dane, living alone in a ramshackle castle; he dreams of donating his homestead to the Russian Orthodox Church to become a monastery. In a long black overcoat, with a shock of unruly white hair, and glasses perched on the tip of his nose, he looks like a character straight out of Dickens. Enter Sister Ambrosija, a remarkably attractive young Russian nun, who arrives with a small entourage and plans to whip the place into shape. A whirlwind of activity (days begin at 5:30 am), she insists upon extensive repairs; Mr. Vig wants Band-Aids where she suggests surgery. Their contest of wills plays out in humorous, offbeat encounters that take unexpected turns as two unlikely people find companionship and common ground. Hauntingly shot, THE MONASTERY is a modern fairytale with timeless roots.
